100+ Years Caring for Our Community.

We have been dedicated to caring for older adults in our Jewish community and beyond for over a century.

Our mission began in 1910 when a small group of individuals identified the need to provide sufficient housing, food and holistic support to older members of the community. With this great need in mind, they acquired a brick rowhouse that had the potential to accommodate ten residents. The Hebrew Home for the Aged was officially established in 1916.

“Each of us should utilize whatever means and talents we possess and accept responsibility for making our community a better place in which succeeding generations—Christians, Jews, and Muslims, whites and non-whites—may live, work, and grow in conditions of justice and well-being.”
– CHARLES E. SMITH

In 1964, our commitment expanded to provide comprehensive medical and nursing care. Charles E. Smith was crucial in securing a new location and funding, establishing the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington on the Rockville Campus in 1969.

Our campus has since grown to offer a full continuum of care. The Wasserman and Smith-Kogod Residences, along with the Post-Acute Care Center, provide skilled nursing services. Independent living is available at Revitz House and Ring House, while Landow House offers assisted living. Geriatric medical care is provided at Hirsh Health Center.

In May 2006, in honor of the late Charles E. Smith’s visionary leadership and the Charles E. Smith Foundation’s generosity, our residences and services merged under the name Charles E. Smith Life Communities. In 2014, we expanded to include memory care and assisted living at Cohen-Rosen House and the ElderSAFE™ Center, providing temporary shelter and advocacy for elder abuse victims.

Join us in shaping the next 100 years of compassionate care.
